Pride was the cause of it all. It had been the origin, the continuation and the end of them, ever since the scorching flame called “soul” entered their chests.

Great things they could do, with such power at hand. Conquer, defeat, create.

Gwyn had been the first of them and possibly the Greatest in accomplishments. He obtained so many titles, so many honors--the Lord of Sunlight, the Sun Himself, King of the Gods--that his reason became so fogged and obsessed with those, that he literally lost his grasp on reality. He lost everything he could really call his own--family, friends, companions--in favor of hollow ties and an hollow existence.

Most of all, his own fear and pride ended up clouding his senses. Unable to let go of the goals he reached and wanting to leave behind a legacy, in the form of his own accomplishments, he begun to destroy everything he came to build up with his own hands. He found himself alone, despite being father of many and leader of so many more. Every single thing he gave and shared with them, even his own soul--a sign of acceptance, the greatest honor, he repeated himself in an endless stream of delusions--, ended up meaning less than nothing in the end.

The only thing that kept his mind from going completely insane was the absolute belief that he did all for the greater good, because he just couldn't bear the thought of having made the wrong choice. He simply couldn't.

As he was the Greatest to rise, he was the Greatest to fall.

Following his glorious steps was the genius Witch and her Sisters of chaos. The Witch of Izalith, mistress of fire and magecraft. There was no one that could say to understand the concept of flames itself, nor no one who she would share her knowledge with--if not for jealousy, simply because such sheer level of power escaped understanding for the masses. The only one that might have been able to follow her explanations and theories was the Scaleless, but she was far from stupid enough to share her secrets with an envious traitor.

Instead, she focused on her own research, her own goals, and it was her own knowledge and the refusal of confrontation with others that lead to her destruction. Or better, her rebirth in a truly despicable form that nothing had to do with wisdom nor intelligence. Her arrogance forced her to writhe in agony, century after century--unable to die, unless Fate decided to send her a valiant warrior to end her suffering.

Sometimes she wondered how could have been if she and her beloved sisters never tried to recreate the first flame. There would have been no mutations, no birth of demons, no agony. And with Gwyn's fall, they could have been the Goddesses of the whole world.

Those ambitions, too, fed the flame that slowly devoured each part of her consciousness.

Maybe it all began after they won against the Everlasting Dragons.

After the ages spent below the earth, with nothing to hope for other than a peaceful rest granted by the eternal darkness, the three Lords and their legions could proudly say that they won something worth fighting for. Something more akin to living, than just existing and waiting for their time to end. The idea of going back to the coldness and emptiness of the undergroundignited something stronger and fiercer than the first flame in them.

Of course, nothing could have been done against the Everlasting tribe, if not for the glorified traitor. Seath the Scaleless--he had been the core of it all. If he hadn’t revealed the dragons’ secret (their fatal weakness) the war could have lasted even more than it did. And the dead count might have been even higher than the days spent fighting.

Even so, when confronted with the facts, the Lords would proudly say that it was just their Fate. That they were destined to greatness.

May Velka forgive their sins, for they have brought forth the end of many after all.
